Publisher's Write-Up

A sweeping dramatic story of courage and honour set in the merciless and cut-throat Viking world.

Farm boys Ottar and Ketil love to hear stories about the Great Army; the ruthless warriors ruled by pirate kings, the glory and riches won in blood-soaked battles.

They can only dream of such adventure until a Viking ship comes to port and the boys decide to join the raiding party. As blood brothers, they have sworn to protect each other. But now the arrows of war threaten to pierce their loyalty, the axes to sever their friendship. If they cannot stand strong together, their bodies may be left on the battlefield to feast the wolves.

Key Stage: KS2/3 E/H; Age 11+

Farm boys Ottar and Ketil, were training to fight the Saxons. Ulfbjorn made them practise every day. Ottar was dying to be one of the Great Army and Ketil was also keen to fight for the king of Norway. He’d heard about Halfdan and Guthrum who were the great leaders of the Vikings. The boys loved to hear the blood-thirsty stories of the battles. Suddenly they get a chance to act out their dreams when a ship the Wave Strides arrived in port. Would they be sea sick and could they actually fight? Would the family agree or would the boys be cowards when they came to leave?

The descriptions of their way of living during that period are excellent. Would the blood brothers survive all their adventures or would war divide? Read this exciting story of loyalty and bravery set in the merciless times of the Viking and Saxon wars!
