Publisher's Write-Up

Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can't tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city itself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal registration act, times haven't been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lay low for a bit, and let the mortals calm down. That's when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch black - and things really start getting ugly. Chicago's mayor insists it's nothing to worry about, but Merit knows only the darkest magic could have woven a spell powerful enough to change the very fabric of nature. She'll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who's behind this, and stop them before it's too late for vampires and humans alike.

The fifth entry in Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series, perfect for fans of Charlaine Harris and Kelley Armstrong

Cadogan house's (one of the three major vampire houses) Sentinel Merit is back in the fifth and latest of the Chicagoland Vampire series.

Merit is battling her feelings on losing Ethan (master vampire and her lover, who died saving her life) and the unwelcome changes to best friend Mallory (currently taking her exams in magic to become a full blown sorceress.) When suddenly the lakes are still as if frozen and the sky is red. Merit and her new partner Jonah have to find out who and what is causing these elemental changes. Humans are blaming vampires and threatening their world.

Merit is an amazingly likeable character with an iron will and determination. A character to get behind. There is an interesting but tentative tension between merit and new partner Jonah, that builds to a crescendo that leaves the reader wandering if it'll lead anywhere: 'Jonah kissed me with the intimacy of a lover and the confidence of a challenger to the throne, daring me to think outside the box I’d walled around me.'

The quick wit of the well drawn, colourful characters gives the book the right dose of light hearted humour. Chloe Neill has produced another fast paced, action packed thrill of a read, with an ending that leaves an open avenue for a sixth book.
