Edie has a successful career in PR, a close working relationship with her colleagues, good friends, and romantic interests, or so she thought.

When she is kissed by the groom at a work wedding and is seen, her life falls apart. She is offered a lifeline by her caring boss. It is a job, for several months Ghost-writing an autobiography for a new, and fast-rising TV star, known for his smouldering looks, easy charisma and life-changing role in a TV fantasy series.

Edie finds that living in Nottingham is a mixed blessing. She grew up there, her father and distant eco-warrior sister still live there, as do two of her closest school friends, who are also going through life and relationship issues.

When the kiss goes viral, Edie becomes the Pariah. People dig into her life, painting her as the wrong-doer, the seducer, when it was Jack the groom who kissed her and put her in an unfortunate position. It is later revealed that he only married for the money. Scenes where Edie turns the table on both Jack and Louis are well written.

This is a real book of wish fulfilment and shows the influence that social media has on our lives. The fall-out from the kiss at the wedding, and an argument between Edie and Elliot on the street in Nottingham push Edie into an unwelcome spotlight.

Spoiler Alert

Moving back into her childhood home is also well described, with the distance between her father, and her forthright sister bringing elements of both comedy and pathos. The developing relationship between Edie and her father’s neighbour is also well-drawn. Edie gets under the skin of her cantankerous new friend, finding an interesting life under the carapace of her current situation.

The relationship that Edie and Elliot develop is one of faltering feelings, undeclared love, and the complications of love in the spotlight. When Elliot has to move for a new career in America, Edie stays behind. Their lives changed for the time that they spent together.

The end of the book shows Edie and her sister and Father’s relationship better than it has ever been. They have apologised for any wrongs of the past. Over Christmas, they are at Edie’s, with her two old friends, and their new partners, when there is a knock at the door. Can you guess who it might be?
