I have been a fan of Arthur C Clarke for a few years and he usually manages to surprise with some of the things that he foresees (He wrote about mobile phones years before they were let loose on the public).

In Rendezvous he speculates about what would happen if an obviously alien creation was found to be travelling on a course that would take it through our solar system. The book is based in the year 2131 when mankind has got a regular space exploration programme and has colonised several of the planets.

A hastily arranged exploration party is sent to investigate Rama and finds that it is devoid of life (or is it) but I won't say too much otherwise there's no point reading it.

All I will say is that it raises more questions than it answers, but to quote the last line in the book 'The Ramans do everything in threes'

I really enjoyed the book and found it to be thought provoking at times.
